The Things of Life

A car tire lies in the bushes, people shout excitedly, whistles sound. The seriously injured driver of the car involved in the accident is still alive. His life is recounted in flashbacks: Parisian architect Pierre Bérard lives with the young translator Hélène. He has separated from his wife Catherine and his son Bertrand, but they remain on friendly terms. Instead of traveling to Tunis with Hélène as promised, he tells his wife and son that he is going on vacation to Île de Ré. Hélène and Pierre have been in crisis for some time. Pierre writes her a letter proposing that they separate. Finally, he changes his mind and wants to meet Hélène in Rennes to tell her that he wants to marry her. He puts the letter in his jacket pocket. On the way to a business meeting in Rennes, Pierre has to swerve to avoid an obstacle and crashes into a truck. Seriously injured, he is taken to a hospital. Catherine and Bertrand are already there. In the blurred thoughts of the dying Pierre, only one obsession stands out: no one must find the letter to Hélène.
