The Tamarind Seed

Widowed when her husband was killed in a car accident three years ago, Judith Farrow, who works in the Home Office in London as the assistant to Sam Neilson, embarks in an affair with Paris-based married RAF group captain Richard Paterson. Breaking it off with Paterson when she discovers that he is not only not going to leave his wife Rachel as he said he would, but that he is staying with her upon news that Rachel is pregnant, Judith, to nurse her emotional wounds, is granted an early two-week vacation which she takes in Barbados. There, she meets similarly vacationing Feodor Sverdlov, a Soviet military attaché currently assigned to the embassy in Paris. Despite being married himself with his wife still back in the Soviet Union, Sverdlov pursues Judith romantically. This situation is not lost on either the British or Soviets. With Sverdlov long having been on his radar, Jack Loder with the British Secret Service, is concerned they vacationing in Barbados is not coincidental as he knows that Judith would be an asset to the Soviets in Neilson having enough valuable information to the enemies, and she easily getting back into a relationship with Paterson if requested to do so by the Soviets. Loder is already having to deal with some extramarital affairs within the British diplomatic corps which have the potential to upset the apple cart, but arguably more problematic that there is a possible double agent in their midst working for the Soviets, hence the reason why Sverdlov has been on his radar. General Golitsyn, heading the Soviet Embassy in Paris, also believes that Judith would be a good asset for them if Sverdlov is able to recruit her. Judith and Sverdlov are quite aware of how their personal relationship looks to their proverbial professional masters and as such are constantly being surveilled on both sides, but the question remains if they both vacationing in Barbados at the same time was indeed not coincidental.

The Passion of the Christ

2 hr 7 mins
A depiction of the last twelve hours in the life of Jesus of Nazareth, on the day of his crucifixion in Jerusalem. The story opens in the Garden of Olives where Jesus has gone to pray after the Last Supper. Betrayed by Judas Iscariot, the controversial Jesus - who has performed 'miracles' and has publicly announced that he is 'the Son of God' - is arrested and taken back within the city walls of Jerusalem. There, the leaders of the Pharisees confront him with accusations of blasphemy; subsequently, his trial results with the leaders condemning him to his death. Jesus is brought before Pontius Pilate, the prefect of the Roman province of Judaea, for his sentencing. Pilate listens to the accusations leveled at Jesus by the Pharisees. Realizing that his own decision will cause him to become embroiled in a political conflict, Pilate defers to King Herod in deciding the matter of how to persecute Jesus. However, Herod returns Jesus to Pilate who, in turn, gives the crowd a choice between which prisoner they would rather to see set free - Jesus, or Barabbas. The crowd chooses to have Barabbas set free. Thus, Jesus is handed over to the Roman soldiers and is brutally flagellated. Bloody and unrecognizable, he is brought back before Pilate who, once again, presents him to the thirsty crowd - assuming they will see that Jesus has been punished enough. The crowd, however, is not satisfied. Thus, Pilate washes his hands of the entire dilemma, ordering his men to do as the crowd wishes. Whipped and weakened, Jesus is presented with the cross and is ordered to carry it through the streets of Jerusalem, all the way up to Golgotha. There, more corporal cruelty takes place as Jesus is nailed to the cross-suffering, he hangs there, left to die. Initially, in his dazed suffering, Jesus is alarmed that he has been abandoned by God his father. He then beseeches God. At the moment of his death, nature itself over-turns.
