Middle age married couple Artie and Iris Sawyer are the resident managers of an aging apartment building in New York City. Hard working Artie does his best to maintain the building with what few resources he is provided. While Iris has accepted their working class lot in life, Artie has the pipe dream of bettering their lives in wanting to take a correspondence course to become a mechanical engineer. In his dissatisfaction, Artie also wants to prove to himself that he is still attractive to other women. It is in that want that he falls for the sob story of Claudine, a young woman he meets at his local bar. In her need for a place to stay for just one night, he agrees to let her stay in the one currently vacant unit in the building in her inference that they will spend the night together while Iris is away. That sob story was just that, as she had targeted him as three of her friends invade the suite, they stating that they plan to stay for a couple of weeks. What Artie does not initially know is that the reason for targeting him is that they plan to rob the bank next door, the group led by Claudine's boyfriend, Billy, a Vietnam vet. Artie also does not know just how far Billy will go to achieve his end goal. Artie has to figure out a way to get himself and Iris out of this mess.
