Gordon is a lowly stagehand working in a Toronto opera house. When the Peking Opera visits town, he is immediately enamored with Mei-lin, one of the principal singers. He pursues her despite Mei-lin being shy and timid and a romance eventually blossoms. However, what little chance their love has to succeed is ultimately doomed, for the troupe must inevitably return to China.
