The Howling Reviews

A wonderful combination of horror, laughs, and state-of-the-art special effects from director and Roger Corman alumnus Joe Dante (PIRANHA, GREMLINS, EXPLORERS), screenwriter (now screenwriter-director) John Sayles (PIRANHA, RETURN OF THE SECAUCUS SEVEN, BROTHER FROM ANOTHER PLANET), and makeup artist Rob Bottin. Wallace plays a television anchorwoman who, after being severely traumatized while investigating a story, decides to venture to Macnee's ultra-exclusive California transcendental meditation spa with husband Stone. Unfortunately, the members of Macnee's cult are all werewolves. The transformation scenes are incredible--the highlight being when sexy siren Brooks seduces Stone and they make love under the moonlight while turning into werewolves. Dante fills the film with hysterical cameos from Corman (at a phone booth) and Sayles (a morgue attendent), among others, and demonstrates a subtle wit and a flair for horror. A must-see for horror fans, with more than one viewing recommended. Unfortunately, a slew of really awful sequels followed.
