Such was the popularity of Francis X. Bushman that even a minor Essanay effort like the three-reel The Great Silence cleaned up at the box office. A wealthy young mine owner (Bushman) heads to the city, where he chances to meet a pretty young woman. Only after their marriage does the husband realize that the union was carefully planned by the girl's father and brother, in hopes of gaining access to the hero's fortune. Though the girl is blameless in this matter, the mine owner spurns her and heads back home. She dutifully follows after him, finally convincing him that her love is pure, honest, and unconditional. The heroine in The Great Silence was played by Beverly Bayne, whose real-life marriage to star Francis X. Bushman had to be hushed up so as not to disillusion Bushman's legions of adoring female fans.
