The Gorilla began its life as a stage production burlesquing mystery plays. The concept carried well into the silent format, especially with perennial cop Fred Kelsey in the cast. The star of the film, Charles Murray, plays Garrity, a rather dense detective who, with his partner Mulligan (Kelsey), is out to solve a murder case. With a plot similar to Edgar Allen Poe's Murders in the Rue Morgue (only comic), everyone seems guilty, including the butler (Syd Crossley), the cook (Aggie Herring) and Uriah Townsend (Tully Marshall), relative of victim Cyrus Townsend (Claude Gillingwater). Oh yes, and let us not forget the murderous gorilla who is wandering around the Townsend home. A young Walter Pidgeon has a small role here as a romantic interest for Alice Day, who has the ingenue role Alice Townsend.
