Mid-1910s matinee idol Robert Warwick found himself in a dilemma typical to most leading men -- playing the hero all the time gets dull, but no one would ever cast him as a villain. Here he solves the problem: The picture starts with Warwick walking into the office of director Albert Capellani (the film's actual director). Capellani offers him the role of a heavy and hands him the script. The next four reels show Warwick playing a Raffles-like character, an ingenious crook who moves through society, committing robberies and even murder. But he comes to a bad end and kills himself. The next shot shows Warwick finishing up the screenplay and declaring that he wouldn't play such a wicked character "for $10,000!" (What would he have thought of the multi-multi million dollar contacts of 1990s sensations like Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt?) Perhaps it was just as well that Warwick didn't opt for heavy roles -- he wasn't very good with the one here.
