Inspired by the accomplishments of Mary McLeod Bethune, who made and sold so many sweet potato pies that, with her earnings she established many schools for the under-privileged, this film was funded by the world-wide Moral Re-Armament movement, founded by Dr Frank Buchman of which its Narrator Joel McCrea and his son Jody were sponsoring members.
