This interesting satire is framed by the premise of pre-existence of the soul and the idea that those who become mortal babies must be persuaded to come to earth to lead a life of pain and heartbreak. Most of the story centers on newly impregnated television reporter Maria. Feeling the ticking of her biological clock and wanting a baby, but not a husband, she chooses a married man to impregnate her. She is happy to be carrying life in her womb until she meets another expecting woman who gives her disturbing news: her baby and all others are refusing to be born in such a world. Maria believes her and becomes terrified. She tries to convince various doctors about her fears that the unborn have gone on strike, but none take her seriously, even though her research reveals that there has been a dramatic jump in stillbirths, forced labors, and delayed deliveries. In desperation, Maria searches for the woman who informed her of this and finds out she has killed herself. Maria persists with her campaign to alert the world and nearly loses her job and all of her friends. She finally encounters one man, a retired genetic researcher, who takes her seriously, but he has his own issues to deal with and so Maria travels to a coastal town and begins trying to talk to her unborn son whose body is dying inside her. To her surprise, he talks back and an interesting discussion ensues.
