Ishwar, a refugee after the Partition of India, raises his sister Sita and an orphan boy, Abhiram. As they grow up near the Subarnarekha River, Sita and Abhiram fall in love, but Ishwar rejects their relationship due to caste prejudice. They run away to Kolkata, where poverty leads to tragedy: Abhiram dies and Sita is forced into prostitution. Years later, Ishwar unknowingly encounters her in a brothel, leading to a devastating recognition and highlighting the lasting trauma of displacement and social divisions.
