Ouida was a popular author of the nineteenth century and several of her stories, including Under Two Flags and this one, were made into silent pictures. Although Lord Strathmore (Charles Clary) professes to be a woman hater, he falls for Lady Vasavour, a woman with a questionable background. Strathmore's friend, Bertie Errol (Alfred Paget), tries to warn him against her but it only causes bad blood between the two men and a duel results. Errol is killed and his wife dies of shock when she hears the news. Strathmore raises Errol's child, Lucille (who grows up to be played by Francelia Billington). At 18, she is a beautiful young girl, and the Comte de Valdor proposes to her. She turns him down, however, because she has fallen in love with Strathmore. At first he shies away from the match because he killed her father, but then he admits that he, too, has fallen in love with her.
