Fifteen-year-old Emerson moves with her parents to a remote, strictly religious community in the Canadian woods, where her father is from. But this fresh start isn't easy for Emerson: At school, she's an outsider, and at home, her father's outbursts of anger and the community's oppressive rules dominate her daily life. When the body of a missing student is found, the men of the community declare a cougar to be the culprit and set out to hunt the animal. Emerson, however, is certain she saw a different creature in the woods. Caught between dark fantasies and real danger, she begins to suspect that there is more to the girl's death than meets the eye. She finds solace in her classmate Delilah, who is also ostracized for defying the rigid system. A close bond forms between the two. Drawing on stories of dark spirits and their own imaginations, Emerson and Delilah develop a ritual meant to grant them protection and strength. Soon, other girls join them. In their secret meetings in the woods, with painted faces and symbols they've created themselves, they search for a power stronger than the rules of the adult world. But as conflicts in the community escalate and danger draws nearer, their meaningful rituals collide with reality.
