Shaw University started in December 1865 with a bible class for newly freed slaves in Raleigh, North Carolina. Fighting vicious prejudice in the aftermath of the Civil War, Shaw rises to become a co-educational college, a medical school, law school and divinity school. But Jim Crow and "separate but equal" segregation laws force the University to curtail its ambitions. Shaw rises again during the Civil Rights Movement as the birthplace of SNCC, the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee. Today, as the oldest Historically Black College in the South, Shaw continues to face challenges to its mission and its existence.
