In Richard Roundtree's first outing as supercool private-eye John Shaft (which he would play in two sequels and a short-lived CBS TV series), the sleuth is hired by a Harlem mobster to find his kidnapped teenage daughter, which leads him to a black-militant group and a gang of Mafia hit men. Isaac Hayes' title tune won a Best Song Oscar.
