Samson was a five-reel adaptation of a stage play by Henri Bernstein. William Farnum plays Duvain, a rough-hewn French dockworker known as Samson because of his extraordinary strength. Samson's personal Delilah is Marie, the aristocratic wife of businessman Branchart. Falling in love with each other, Duvain and Marie have quite a time keeping their romance a secret from her husband. But when the bumbling Duvain delivers a bouquet of roses to his lady love, the jig is up. The climactic fistfight between Duvain and Branchart is augmented by an incredibly elaborate "mob scene" involving hundreds of disgruntled stevedores. The original New York stage production of Samson served as a vehicle for William Gillette of Sherlock Holmes fame.
