Faced with the consequences of his rebellion's mounting failure, Robert the Bruce flees from battle to escape those seeking to collect the reward for his capture. Robert finds shelter in the home of a peasant woman, and they bond as she tends to him. The nobleman then learns the true extent of Scottish nationalism, inspiring him to resume the cause for independence.
