Reefer Madness: The Movie Musical
Is a musical spoof of Reefer Madness (1939), which at the time of its production in 1938 was meant to be an educational warning about the perils of marijuana use, but which has, over the years, become a cult classic in what has been seen as its campy, over-the-top, and unrealistic message. 1936. A man is on his latest small town stop to screen the film "Tell Your Children" (TYC) to parents of specifically high schoolers, the movie depicting the ill effects of marijuana use on the unsuspecting, the target of many drug pushers being teenagers to get them hooked early to become customers for life in their need for the addictive drug. Those ill effects purport to be debauchery, uncontrollable sexual desire, and delirium among others. At the center of TYC are wholesome good kids Jimmy Harper and Mary Lane, who only have eyes for each other. But Jimmy is lured to what he is unaware at the time is a marijuana den, the home of Mae Coleman, who long ago was hooked on the drug by pusher Jack Stone. Jack was the one who brought Jimmy to the house and is trying, through underhanded means, to do the same to Jimmy. Jimmy's marijuana use drastically affects his personality and affects the lives of those around him, including Mary. Beyond what the parents think about TYC, buying into its concept which affects how they take in its intended message, the primary question becomes if Jimmy and by association Mary can come back to regain their lives after the scourge of the drug use.
