Jocelyn Lambert, known as Joss, is an English literature professor in the United States. She is trying to earn a tenured position at a university but is having trouble with her research paper. Her deceased mother had grown up on a farm in England, and Joss goes to visit for the first time. There, she meets Daniel Carter, whose family runs the farm. Daniel is a struggling single father who lives with his daughter and his mother. Joss and Daniel form a connection and try to help each other with their respective problems.
