Orpheus was produced in 2006 as a high-budget pilot for CBS by executive producers Ridley and Tony Scott and director Bruce Beresford. The story follows Guy Lawrence (Nick D'Agosto), a privileged young man from a prominent Boston legal family who is drifting across the country before starting college. After being drugged and robbed at a concert in the Pacific Northwest, Guy is rescued by Sue Ellen (Mena Suvari), a charismatic waitress with a mysterious past. Sue Ellen introduces Guy to the "Temple of Grand Design," a radical organization led by a figure known as "Brother" (Eion Bailey). The group rejects modern "corporate cons" like banks, television, and organized religion, instead focusing on "Stages of Self-Awareness" and personal ranking. Guy is deeply enticed by Sue Ellen and the group's philosophy that there is no grand design in the universe except the one an individual creates for themselves. The narrative shifts when Guy follows the group to their base in Seattle to meet the inner circle, including the devoted Karen (Fairuza Balk). However, Guy is suddenly pulled back to his "old life" in Boston when his mother suffers a health crisis. Reunited with his wealthy parents and his best friend Barry (Patrick J. Adams), Guy finds himself fundamentally changed. His family and friends—including his girlfriend Patty (Stacey Farber)—perceive his new perspective as a psychological breakdown. The pilot concludes with Guy alienated from his elite upbringing, struggling to reconcile his "Galatian" (unranked) status in the real world with the radical purpose he found within the cult.
