This rambling documentary explores the interaction between African culture, particularly that of the Yoruba people of West Africa, and various cultural movements among blacks in the Americas. In particular, it traces the career of Zumbi, a Yoruba man who had been shipped to Brazil to work as a slave, and who escaped in the 17th century and sought to build a Black/Indio nation which would have integrated the two. The people he led were called the Quilombos. This story is then linked to other black movements in the Americas, showing parallels and contrasts.
