Filmmaker Jacques Sarasin profiles the first superstar of Congolese Rumba in this look at the life and career of renowned musician Wendo Kolosoy. Much like the history of his native Congo itself, the story of "Papa Wendo" is highlighted by troubles that are alternately political, personal, and economic. But Wendo was never one to go down without a fight, and through it all he has faced his hardships with a fierce blend of determination and humor -- each filtered in to some of the most vital music to emerge from the Congo. From being persecuted by the church to having his music banned by officials who feared it may stir unrest, Wendo experienced the good and bad sides of fame during his rise to Rumba superstardom. To this day Wendo's music perfectly encapsulates the hopeful optimism and unbreakable spirit of the Congolese people, and on the eve of his reunion with his old band the Victoria Bakolo Miziki Players director Sarasin sets out to tell his subject's story for the benefit of fans everywhere.
