My Policeman

Tom and Marion Burgess are a long married and retired couple living in the quiet town of Peacehaven on the English coast. On her initiative and in believing that they owe him, Marion has made arrangements for Patrick Hazelwood to stay in their home following a stroke which has left Patrick physically incapacitated, including not having the motor abilities to speak, and thus needing care at least in the short term. The summer that the three of them met in 1957 in Brighton, they were inseparable. Marion and Tom, a teacher and newly minted police officer, respectively, were reacquainted that summer after not seeing each other for years and only knew each other casually up to that point. Believing his cultural tastes more basic, Tom introduced Marion to Patrick, a museum curator, in feeling that artistically inclined Marion would be more simpatico with Patrick, who he met through a police case. While Marion and Patrick were indeed more of a match on paper, Marion felt more of a kinship and romantic fire with Tom, hence their marriage one year later in 1958. However, Tom doesn't want Patrick in the house now and refuses to even see or speak to him. While Marion is aware of what happened in its entirety to break that bond between Tom and Patrick, she recounts the story from Patrick's perspective in reading through his journals. While what happened affected all three of them negatively in different ways, Marion believes she may have the most control of the situation now for all their happiness, control which she didn't have in the same way in the 1950s.
