The final film from the late, great Senegalese filmmaker Ousmane Sembene is a deeply moving drama about a highly controversial practice: female genital mutilation. In one rural African village, this age-old "purifying" ritual meets stiff opposition from one mother (Fatoumata Coulibaly) determined to protect her daughter. Despite the seriousness of the subject matter, the film is a rich, unexpectedly uplifting experience. Maimouna Helene Diarra Salimata Traore.
