Somewhere in southern Europe. The fiery Malva turns heads with her sensuous dances in a wine tavern. Even the gendarme Tassilo is completely captivated by her exotic beauty. Possessive and jealous as ever, Tassilo doesn't want Malva to dance for another man. While keeping a close watch on her, the police officer learns that the notorious smuggler Tadzio is in the area. This man has been wanted by the police for a long time. The impetuous Tadzio has eluded his pursuers time and again, and this time, it seems he won't go down without a fight. The smuggling ringleader takes refuge in Malva's apartment, where he ambushes the dancer upon her return and threatens her with a knife. He orders her to hide him there, or else he'll kill her. Malva agrees and hides the fugitive in a secret room beneath hers, accessible only through a trapdoor covered by a rug. Tassilo and his men comb through the entire area and eventually arrive at Malva's apartment. The police dogs track down Tadzio despite the hidden trapdoor, and he is quickly found. Malva, however, who has grown fond of the rival of the unpopular Tassilo, helps the king of the smugglers escape. After Tadzio escapes through the window, Tassilo turns his attention to Malva and arrests the young woman instead of Tadzio. Tadzio flees into the mountains he knows so well, where he reunites with his accomplice, Gregori. Tadzio demands that Gregori free the young woman who helped him escape. The heist is a success, and Malva and Tadzio disappear into a secluded mountain cave, where Tadzio and his men usually hide with their contraband. The two young people spend happy days there, and Malva believes she has found the man of her dreams in the bandit leader Tadzio. Tadzio is ready to leave his old life behind for her. Just one more smuggling run, and he'll leave the country with Malva to start a new life in an unknown place. But it wasn't long before Tassilo and his gendarmes surrounded the fugitive. They were waiting for Tadzio to emerge from his cave so they could arrest him. Malva was dying to see her lover again. The bandit leader was tried and sentenced to five years in prison. Tadzio slipped a note to his accomplice Gregori for Malva, telling her to hang in there and wait for him. Gregori, who had his eye on Malva, destroyed the message and wrote one of his own, assuring her that she could trust him completely, since Tadzio would not be seeing freedom again anytime soon. Gregori hoped to easily seduce the abandoned young woman, but she rejected him and resisted his advances with all her might. Meanwhile, Tassilo had returned to the mountains, convinced that Malva was hiding in the same place where he had captured Tadzio. He did indeed discover the bandits' cave and arrived just in time to free Malva from Gregori's clutches. Tassilo begs Malva to follow him and leave everything behind. He offers her more or less the same deal he offered Tadzio: if she agrees to come with him, he's willing to start their lives over from scratch at any other police station in the country and forget everything that's happened. Malva agrees, no longer believing Tadzio will return. Malva and Tassilo get married and have a child. During the baptism, a news alert sounds: Tadzio has escaped and is nearby. Immediately, Tassilo and his men set out to find him. But Tadzio has rushed back to his cave and learns from Gregori that Malva has become the police sergeant's wife. Enraged, Tadzio rushes to the sergeant's house and comes face to face with Malva. He is about to kill her for her alleged betrayal when he hears a baby crying in the next room. Tadzio abandons her and finally receives from Malva the fake note from Gregori, in which he tells her not to wait for him. Tadzio flees once more, this time to kill the treacherous Gregori. However, the bullets fired by the police officers in pursuit are faster and strike him fatally. As he lies dying, he asks to be taken to Malva, who is by his side in his final moments, and he closes his eyes forever.
