Harry Lachman, who at the age of 42 gave up a successful career as a painter to become a film director, called the shots in the 1931 French production Le Monsieur de Minuit. Based on the stage play Almost a Honeymoon, this is the story of a financially embarrassed young man who rents his apartment to an engaged couple. After a drunken night on the town, our hero inadvertently stumbles into the apartment, where he is accidently locked up for the night with the mortified young bride-to-be. Forced by these circumstances to marry the girl himself, the protagonist turns out rather surprisingly to be the ideal husband. Filmed in 12 days, Le Monsieur de Minuit was lensed in part on location at the celebrated Paris Lido, where the real-life revelers gleefully did "extra" duty.
