A private investigator takes on an unusual job that may answer some lingering questions from his own past in former Robert Bresson protégé Hugo Santiago's 2002 crime drama The Wolf of the West Coast. P.I. Lew Millar (James Faulkner) has earned a respectable reputation for his investigative successes -- enough so to attract the attention of American expatriate Nick Nemo. A former mob informant hiding out in Lisbon, Portugal, Nemo offers a hefty sum of money to Millar if the detective will act as the snitch's bodyguard. Not overly excited at the prospect, Millar accepts the position -- only to arrive at Nemo's residence just after the ex-gangster has been mortally wounded by an assassin's bullet. Slipping back into detective mode, Millar finds a handful of suspects ranging from Nemo's brother Harry (Gerard Watkins), his sister-in-law, and his step-niece to the Asian-born Parisian judge who may be the daughter of one of Millar's former army pals. As his investigation commences, Millar's own history becomes uncomfortably and irretrievably intertwined in the case.
