The Horla
A solitary man whose peaceful existence is gradually disrupted by the feeling that an invisible presence has entered his life. At first, strange and unexplained events appear almost insignificant. Objects seem to move on their own, familiar surroundings become threatening, and the protagonist begins to suspect that an unseen being—the Horla—is watching him and exerting a growing influence over his thoughts and actions. His attempts to understand and resist this presence become increasingly obsessive. As his fear intensifies, the distinction between what is real and what may exist only in his mind becomes increasingly uncertain.
