Despite his heroic name, Hercules Napoleon "Nap" Cameron (Henry Hull) lives out his adventures only in the books he reads. After attending a party thrown by Alice Winthrop (Doris Kenyan), she invites him to a waterfront dive called the Red Lamp. The duo is shanghaied by the evil Captain Finn (Louis Wolheim) and are soon at sea. On board is a monster, captured by Finn, that he intends to sell to interested scientists. The monster escapes and Finn cowers in fear of the creature. Nap miraculously finds courage for himself that he has only seen in books and temporarily stops the creature's assault. Nap and Alice dive into the water and swim toward land with the monster following in close pursuit.
