Paolo lives a divided life between municipal work, piano playing, his children, and memories of a deeply spiritual childhood. His encounter with Francesca at Nicola's nightclub changes that routine, as the two recognize an immediate attraction and begin imagining intimacy as something more consuming than ordinary romance. They retreat to Paolo's beach house, filling it with food and shutting out much of the outside world. Brief visits from his children and friends puncture their isolation, but Francesca and Paolo increasingly treat their secluded life as a private universe governed by their own peculiar understanding of love.
