John Jackson is driven from home by his wife, with her promising that if he doesn't bring home some money, she will carve his heart out. Jackson tries for a few jobs, and lands one as a hod carrier. But his Irish co-workers refuse to work with him because he is black, and they chase him away. Jackson stumbles across a suitcase lost by an actor. The suitcase contains a wardrobe, so Jackson decides to make himself up as an Irishman and get the job back. But one of his co-workers decides to have some fun. While wetting down some bricks, he turns the hose on Jackson. The makeup is washed off and Jackson is exposed. Jackson starts to run but the workers hurl bricks at him. Before long, he is buried under a pile of bricks.
