The Flanigans, mother and father Mary and David, and their two sons Steven and Nate, are a close, atheistic middle class family. Now young adults, Steven and Nate have not seen much of each other in the past few years as Steven went away to college. While going to college locally, Nate, now a personal trainer, was physically there when first David then Mary went through terminal illness diagnoses. Upon Mary's passing, Steven comes home for the funeral and an extended visit as both brothers need each other's emotional support to deal with their grief. Because Steven makes the decision to extend his visit even longer, he invites his boyfriend, fellow student Ray, they to share what was Mary and David's bedroom in the small two bedroom house while Nate is in the bedroom that he and Steven shared most of their lives. With Ray's presence and Nate's work colleague, Trent, pining for Nate, they having had one sexual encounter in the not so recent past, Nate in particular of the two brothers begins to wonder about the existence of a God in light of what happened to Mary and David, and if wherever Mary and David are now in the metaphysical sense know about the long held secret he and Steven have kept about their lives together.
