Ulrich Mott is a middle-aged man scrambling to establish a political career for himself in Washington D.C. One day, he meets Elsa Brecht, an octogenarian journalist who decides to give him a chance. It doesn't take her long to fall in love with him, and soon, the two get married. As Ulrich utilizes Elsa's connections for his personal gain, Elsa's daughter Amanda begins to question and oppose the union. However, everything is upended when Elsa is found murdered in her own home.
