Truck driver Jean Chape sets out from Paris early in the morning, planning to hit the road again that night. But the trip doesn't go as planned: It's raining heavily, and Jean suddenly feels something under his truck's tires. Has he run someone over? Chape notifies the police, whose investigation reveals that the victim was a gangster - who was already dead when Chape ran him over with his truck. As if Chape hadn't already been through enough terror, he is suddenly pursued by a mysterious car on his way home to Auvergne. The dead crook's accomplices believe that their stolen goods are hidden in Chape's truck. In his desperation, the threatened truck driver calls on his fellow long-haul drivers for help.
