A poor Chinese sculptor tries to raise money to buy the daughter of a greedy father. Tai Leung (Sessue Hayakawa) fails in his attempt to secure the funds, and the girl's father makes arrangements for her to marry another man. When she refuses, she is locked up in hopes she will eventually change her mind. Tai agrees to change places with the bandit Canton Wolf, who is scheduled to die in five days. He is willing to die in the criminal's place in exchange for the condemned man's wealth and five days with the woman he loves. Canton Wolf unexpectedly dies of cholera, and Tai rushes to be with his intended lover. Sadly, he finds her unconscious after she has tried to kill herself, and he makes a desperate attempt to save her life.
