Sofia Gilchrist has a fear of flying, so much so that she attends a fear of flying support group to help her get to the point of taking a flight and thus hopefully getting over the fear. It is thus somewhat ironic that she is a senior investigator with the Chicago-based Federal Air Crash Bureau (FACB), which conversely is the reason for that fear in seeing the aftermath of plane crashes. She is known for getting results, but her methods, which are generally outside of the box of standard protocol, have led to her being placed on administrative leave multiple times, this latest in accusing her boss, Kretchen, of incompetence and thus complicity in the failure of duty. The latest crash the FACB investigates is personal to her in that it was a flight to Washington DC she was supposed to be on as her test flight, but that she disembarked in a panic just before it took off. There were no survivors, including who was her support person on that flight, her brother Shane Gilchrist. Despite she being on that administrative leave, she feels the need to be on the investigative team, something that Kretchen definitely will not allow in his fear that she would compromise it in her need to get to the bottom of this specific case by whatever means again generally outside of protocol. But with the clandestine help of the lead investigator, her subordinate and sometimes lover Todd Ruano, and her tech analyst friend Moe who is also on the investigative team, both who are feeding her information, she does begin her own somewhat parallel investigation. But as she goes down rabbit holes of theories, many conspiracies, outside of protocol, she jeopardizes not only her future with the FACB but her friendships with Todd and Moe.
