Alice (Mary Alden) is girl who grew up in the fashionable neighborhood known as the Hill. She falls for John Larkin (Harry T. Morley), a hard-working blacksmith from the poor side of town known as the Road. The union between the two young lovers infuriates her pompous parents and she is promptly disowned. After they marry, the couple eventually have children -- two boys and a girl -- but are surrounded in poverty. Robert Lewis (Colt Albertson) is a former suitor who offers Alice $50,000 to take in their little girl and give her the advantages of wealth and social position. John has lost his sight in an accident and needs money for an operation to restore his vision, but he becomes agitated when Alice tells him of the offer from his former rival. A dream sequence ads an angle of implausibility in this maudlin melodrama.
