Flying in the face of those nay-sayers who insisted that the western was dead in 1928, Hoot Gibson continued to turn out such first-rate oaters as Danger Rider. The story takes place in a frontier penal colony overseen by a no-nonsense warden. Gibson, the warden's irresponsible son, is in love with Eugenia Gilbert, the prison's idealistic supervisor. Alas, Gilbert is interested only in convicts, hoping that she can rehabilitate the poor souls through her kindness. Thus it is that Gibson poses as the colony's most dangerous prisoner as a means to win the heroine's heart. Once the plot has been established, Danger Rider settles down to the more traditional western fare that Gibson's fans had come to expect.
