This Czechoslovakian melodrama was originally titled Dablova Past. 16th century miller Vitezslav Verjarzka manages to save his neighbors from a deadly drought, but at a terrible cost. Accused of witchcraft, Vejarzka is put on trial for his life. His chief tormentor is town inquisitioner Miroslav Machecek, who cares little for the benefits the accused has brought to the town: the law is the law. Anyone who can read will be able to discern parallels between the plotline of Devil's Trap and the iniquities suffered by contemporary Czechoslovakians under Communist rule. The film is based on Mlyn Na Ponome Rece, a novel by Alfred Technik.
