A rare surviving two-reel melodrama from the Thanhouser Company, Crossed Wires starred Inda Palmer as Mrs. Angell, a rich widow whose nephew, Will Drake (J. Morris Foster), warns her against the evil designs of the housekeeper, Susan Watson (Ina Hammer). The latter persuades her invalid employer to cut the nephew from her will, but Mrs. Angell discovers that she is being slowly poisoned and calls the police on the telephone. Alas, the connection is switched in the middle of the conversation and all the police hears are: "I am dying -- poisoned -- Will Drake." Drake is eventually arrested for murdering his aunt but a mystery witness saves him in the nick of time. Due to crossed telephone wires, the witness, Benton (Boyd Marshall), and his girlfriend (Florence LaBadie) had accidentally overheard the rest of the dying woman's plea for help: "Will Drake warned me...Susan is guilty!"
