Brazilian director Hector Babenco ("Kiss of the Spider Woman") crafts a powerful look at life, death and revolt inside a notorious Brazilian prison, site of a bloody, true-life riot in 1992. The prisoners' attempts to survive in the inhumane, pre-riot penitentiary are seen through the eyes of an empathetic doctor (Luiz Carlos Vasconcelos), who arrives to screen the prisoners for AIDS.
