Calling on Cape Town
This Traveltalks visit begins with a short, panoramic view of Cape Town, the legislative capital of South Africa. We then go to Table Mountain, south of the city, and take a tram ride up the mountain and back down. From high above the city, riders can appreciate the many geographic features of the area. In downtown Cape Town, there appear to be no rules for pedestrians to follow when crossing the street. Old and new architectural styles can be seen in adjacent buildings. Some of the city's suburbs are then highlighted. The first stop is Groot Constantia winery, home to government vineyards, which produce some of the finest grapes for South Africa's world-renowned wine. Next is the Groote Schuur estate, where onetime prime minister Cecil Rhodes (after whom the Rhodes Scholarship is named) lived. The last suburb we visit is the seaside resort community of Muizenberg, whose white sandy beaches were made famous in a poem by Rudyard Kipling. The last stop on our tour is the large Rhodes Memorial, made from granite excavated from Table Mountain.

Bridge of Spies
In 1957, lawyer James B. Donovan is recruited from his prestigious law firm to defend accused Soviet spy Rudolf Abel. It's an unenviable task in many respects. Donovan hasn't practiced criminal law since he was a prosecutor at the Nuremburg trials after World War II. Also, the strong anti-Communist mood at the time makes him a target from who think Abel should just be executed. Abel is convicted but Donovan convinces the judge to sentence him to prison, rather than execute him, as they may at some point in the future want to swap him for an American spy the Soviets might have in custody. Just such a scenario comes into play when in 1960 U-2 spy pilot Francis Gary Powers is shot down over Soviet territory and taken prisoner. Donovan is again recruited to act as the intermediary and negotiate swapping Able for the American requiring him to travel to East Berlin crossing the newly built Berlin Wall.
