Sean Maher and Mekhi Phifer star in a remake of the 1971 TV-movie classic about football, courage and a friendship hard-won and tragically lost. As it opens, it's 1965, and Brian Piccolo (Maher) and Gale Sayers (Phifer) are rookie running backs for the Chicago Bears. The talented Sayers is shy and diffident; "Pic," more modestly skilled, is glib and garrulous. So, naturally, owner-coach George Halas makes them roommates. Slowly, they begin to click. But Brian's cancer develops quickly.
