An epic folk tale inextricably woven into the history, culture and mythos of the people of Kannada, the Bollywood opus Basant Bahar revolves around Gopal - the son of the rajjyotshi of Chitaldurg State - whose life gestated from his parents' many years of tireless appellations to the gods. Though Gopal's father long hoped for his son's occupational involvement in astrological practices, Gopal's future intersects with fate in another manner. This brilliant and gifted young man begins to pursue a career as a mellifluous vocalist, and falls into mutual love with the alluring Gopi, daughter of famed singer Neela Sani. Both circumstances arouse the patriarch's chagrin, but Gopal continues down the road of life unabated - until his rival, Mallayya, turns up and tampers with his voice, during the much-anticipated singing competition that marks his adolescent rite-of-passage, and an even direr turn of events estranges Gopi from Gopal. The two ultimately drift toward one final reunion, but amid despairing circumstances that will seal the fate of each lover - even as the events lay the groundwork for a myth that will be passed down to many successive generations.
