In 2003, a group of activists in Prague decided it was time to do something about the traffic problems that were regularly trying the city in knots. They set up a mass bike ride through the city to call attention to the problems cars were bringing to Prague, and pointing to a possible solution in finding more flexible and less environmentally costly alternatives to cars. In time, the mass rides became a regular event, and one held in 2008 attracted five thousand cyclists eager to reduce the use of automobiles, lessen dependence on fossil fuels, cut back on pollution and make Prague and cleaner, healthier place to live. The rides are organized by a group called "Auto*Mate" (meaning "checkmate to automobiles"), and filmmaker Martin Marecek, who spend several years following the group and their events, offers an idiosyncratic look at the group and their efforts to change the way people think about cars in the documentary Auto*Mate. The film was an official selection at the 2010 Traverse City Film Festival.
