Rioting over the installation of a U.S. nuclear base in Iceland is the backdrop for this story of romance based on a 1948 novel by Halldor Laxness. Ugla (Tinna Gunnlaughsdottir) is a good-looking young woman who has come into the city from the countryside and now works as a maid in the home of a famous politician. It does not take long for her to feel an attraction for the man even though he is married. In the meantime, she is studying music and her new friends at her music teacher's house are caring and sympathetic people, in contrast to the politician's aloof, elitist wife and children. Ugla cannot decide how, or when, or if, to approach the politician with her secret feelings for him. For most viewers, the development and the outcome of Ugla's dilemma are predictable, undercutting the drama that leads to her subsequent actions.
