Noted novelist Wang Chao makes his directorial debut with this clever character study about an abandoned baby and a get-rich-quick scheme. The film opens with Yu Dagang (Zhu Jie) milling around the factory he was just canned from, hoping to hawk his old meal tickets for some sorely needed dough. While supping at a local noodle stand, Yu is told by the owner about a baby left behind at the shop by a prostitute from Heilongjiang. Anyone willing to care for the kid will be given 200 yuan a month for expenses. Yu jumps at the chance. After meeting the mother, Feng Yanli, the deal is sealed and Yu trundles the child home, telling the neighbors that it's his sister-in-law's offspring. But Yu's scheme is complicated by a mobster dying of leukemia named Side who wants to care for the lad himself. This film was screened at the 2001 Cannes Film Festival.
