An American Dream

There has always been an imbalance in Stephen and Deborah Rojack's ten year marriage, they now separated with Stephen never having lived in the luxury penthouse apartment purchased for them by her father, Barney Kelly, the eighth richest man in the US. While he did love her when they married, Stephen, a decorated war hero and now a well known local television personality crusading against organized crime, believes Deborah's neuroses stem from she thinking no one could ever love her for her, and not her money. Conversely, Deborah takes whatever opportunity to demean, belittle and thus emasculate him while she openly has casual affairs in the two living their separate lives. In a physical altercation between Stephen and Deborah at the penthouse, Deborah falls to her death off the terrace to the pavement thirty stories down. In the resulting investigation led by Police Detective Roberts, Stephen has to deal with the onslaught coming from many different angles. One is Roberts and his team, who all believe that Deborah's death was not suicide as Stephen says - Stephen's story to protect Deborah from stories about the truth about her neurotic nature - but that he murdered her. Two is Barney, Deborah who poisoned his mind against his son-in-law, who, if he didn't push her off the terrace, contributed to her death. Three is Stephen's business partner Arthur Kabot, who wants to capitalize on the notoriety to advance Stephen's career, not thinking that Stephen may actually be grieving his wife's death regardless of how she died. And four stems from Stephen being reunited with club singer Cherry McMahon, a former serious girlfriend, the two coming to the realization that there are still feelings between them. The issue is not only her current boyfriend Nicky not taking too kindly to Cherry taking up with someone else, but that Nicky is the nephew of violent mob boss Eddie Ganucci, a frequent target in Stephen's public anti-crime crusades.

The Passion of the Christ

2 hr 7 mins
A depiction of the last twelve hours in the life of Jesus of Nazareth, on the day of his crucifixion in Jerusalem. The story opens in the Garden of Olives where Jesus has gone to pray after the Last Supper. Betrayed by Judas Iscariot, the controversial Jesus - who has performed 'miracles' and has publicly announced that he is 'the Son of God' - is arrested and taken back within the city walls of Jerusalem. There, the leaders of the Pharisees confront him with accusations of blasphemy; subsequently, his trial results with the leaders condemning him to his death. Jesus is brought before Pontius Pilate, the prefect of the Roman province of Judaea, for his sentencing. Pilate listens to the accusations leveled at Jesus by the Pharisees. Realizing that his own decision will cause him to become embroiled in a political conflict, Pilate defers to King Herod in deciding the matter of how to persecute Jesus. However, Herod returns Jesus to Pilate who, in turn, gives the crowd a choice between which prisoner they would rather to see set free - Jesus, or Barabbas. The crowd chooses to have Barabbas set free. Thus, Jesus is handed over to the Roman soldiers and is brutally flagellated. Bloody and unrecognizable, he is brought back before Pilate who, once again, presents him to the thirsty crowd - assuming they will see that Jesus has been punished enough. The crowd, however, is not satisfied. Thus, Pilate washes his hands of the entire dilemma, ordering his men to do as the crowd wishes. Whipped and weakened, Jesus is presented with the cross and is ordered to carry it through the streets of Jerusalem, all the way up to Golgotha. There, more corporal cruelty takes place as Jesus is nailed to the cross-suffering, he hangs there, left to die. Initially, in his dazed suffering, Jesus is alarmed that he has been abandoned by God his father. He then beseeches God. At the moment of his death, nature itself over-turns.
