Leo Tolstoy's oft-filmed Kreutzer Sonata was the source for the Italian Amanti Senza Amore (Lovers Without Love). Updated to the 1940s, the story focusses on a romantic triangle involving Doctor Leonardi (Roldano Lupi), his wife Elena (Clara Calamai), and her lover, world-famous violinist Henry Miller (Jean Servais). In a fit of rage, Dr. Leonardi murders Elena, only to discover that he himself was to blame for her infidelity. In flashback, Miller recalls the events leading up to the inevitable tragedy. The ending is as bleak and uncompromising as the rest of the film.
