New York "businessman" Gat Brady is really a racketeer. He is on the radar of the authorities who are trying to crack down on crime in the city. What sets Gat apart is that he doesn't espouse violence characteristic of many of his associates. He has tried to protect his now mid-teen daughter Annabelle at all cost, she who he hasn't seen in six years since he sent her to private school, he using his legal name of Garrett Sloan to register her at the school, and thus she not even knowing that he is racketeer Gat Brady. Publicity catches up to him when the school discovers his true identity forcing him to pull Ann out of the school, she who has since also discovered who he is. Regardless, he wants to take her away to shield her from anything negative associated with being a racketeer. However just as he is about to take her away, he is apprehended by the District Attorney on a lesser charge of tax evasion, which, despite a plea deal, results in he being sentenced to federal prison for five years. In their newfound relationship, Gat and Ann end up doing whatever they can to help the other, which for Ann means striking a relationship with now special prosecutor George Drake, one of the men who prosecuted him, and which for Gat means proverbially keeping his nose clean in prison to get out as quickly as possible. Gat's task is made all the more difficult by fellow incarcerated racketeer Red Carroll who wants to have it out with Gat.
